On the night of 9–10 September 2025, Poland’s airspace was repeatedly violated by Russian drones, in what Prime Minister Donald Tusk called a “large-scale provocation.” According to Polish authorities, between 19 and 23 drones crossed into Polish territory, some from the direction of Belarus. At least eight were shot down by Polish and NATO forces.
Airports in Warsaw, Rzeszów, and Lublin temporarily suspended operations, and debris damaged a residential building in eastern Poland, though no fatalities were reported.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed the drones were “deliberately targeted”, not accidental. In response, Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO Treaty, prompting urgent consultations with allies.
The incident underscores the rising risk of escalation on NATO’s eastern flank and highlights the need for stronger joint air-defense systems across Central and Eastern Europe.
